Sex and the Swami!

Has saffron been stained by the recent misdeeds of a few rogue babas or is sex and spirituality interlinked?

Baba Ramdev, spiritual guru

Beware of Ravanas in saffron!

Our religious roots are so secure that no storm or calamity can uproot them. Since the Mahabharata, we have had Ravanas passing off as sadhus in saffron. But a few rogue elements simply cannot tarnish the ancient teachings of our rishi munis. Today, every galli has a baba, an astrologer or a tarot card reader because saffron robes are available off the shelves. It’s for the people to realise that true identity comes from gyaan (knowledge) not vastra (attire). Ignorance and desperation entrap the common man into the mayajaal of tantra, mantra, yantra and chamatkaar. Be alert; no matter how traumatic or desperate a situation you are in, do a quick backgrounder check on your guru.

Should spiritual gurus marry if they want to? If marriage is the solution to all salacious misdeeds of fake babas, I would say that a person with a dirty mind would eye his neighbour’s wife, notwithstanding his marital status! Sex gives momentary pleasure, while yoga leads to an energy transformation that would provide even greater pleasure. Nothing is absolute. Sex leads to creation but it has to be within limits. If practised outside the marital sphere, sex will lead to evil deeds, rape and diseases.

A guru must know the body’s demands

It is ironic t

hat we associate saffron, a warm colour, with all that is cold, sterile and detached. If we wished to vest a colour with spirituality, we should have chosen a cold blue or a steely grey. For that is how we would like our gurus to be. Untouched by all that is true of us mortals. It is even more ironic that we would like to seek spiritual enlightenment from persons who have chosen (or would like the world to believe so) to remove themselves from the natural and human urges of the corporeal self.

For the spirit to transcend the body, it ought to first know what the demands of the body are. To be able to provide spiritual sustenance to others, the spiritual master ought to be someone who has learnt to deal with what it is to live in the real world and have survived to move towards that greater plane of consciousness. That is what sanyas was all about.

What makes a person seek another for spiritual guidance? A certain lack of anchoring, a loss, a need… in many ways, these gurus offer a crutch in a moment of crisis. And so, when charlatans emerge donning the vestments of gurus, our need takes a further battering.

Perhaps the fault lies with us in wanting to make gods and goddesses of living men and women. By denying them the right to lead human lives. And as they try to grapple with the masks they wear, we let them make fools of us. How could we have forgotten that even the gods and goddesses of myths were not above perfidy or duplicity?

Why should a guru not marry?

Are these scandals new in the religious cycle? From the sanctum sanctorum of ancient temples to the Roman Catholic Church, heinous crimes are being committed by gurus and priests under the guise of religion. There are millions of spiritual gurus who run massage parlours, sodomise young boys and rape women in the name of religion. The misdeeds of Swami Nityananda and Ichchadhari Baba will be forgotten soon. Just the way we’ve forgotten the crimes committed by other fraudulent holy men in the past. Religion is big business today. The common man feels secure in the so-called guidance of a ‘baba’. Gurus have private jets and penthouses. Yet, people tend to look the other way! This brings us to the point that the common man is desperate to gain an identity. Even the educated are vulnerable. It’s an intoxication they would prefer not to give up. If marriage is a solution to sexual crimes committed by religious men, then why should a guru not marry? Celibacy is a choice they make. Purity comes in terms of thoughts and action. Spirituality, morality and ethics are behavioural traits based on three underlying values — integrity, respect and responsibility. These values are universal, across country and religion.

A yogi can conquer his urges

For a normal human being with five basic senses, the satisfaction of these five basic senses is a must. When such a human being holds the hand of a guru, then he or she crosses the sansar sagar and gains complete control and mastery over the five senses. The sense of touch (sexual sense) is one of these senses.

Yoga is a mastery over the senses, where if you choose to have sex then you will. However, desire does not control you, but you control desire and may want to indulge for generating a specific kind of heat, which is used to activate the higher senses. (The orgasm has to be held back in this case and a yogi would maintain the sexual heat for two to 48 hours). Ancient rishis were householders, at times having several wives. There is no doubt that a sexual orgasm drains a yogi of the vital sukra (life force) and a person who orgasms frequently doesn’t deserve to be called a yogi (unless he chooses to orgasm at will, for a specific purpose). If a ‘dhongi’ is commercialising the subject, he is not anywhere near yoga. Faith has been shattered, as fake gurus wear saffron to gain power and money. It is up to the genuine yogis to bring the faith back.
